Suicide
Facts and Figures

Suicide is a leading cause of death in most nations around the globe.

In the U.S.

In the U.S., we lose nearly 50,000 people each year to suicide. But the impact of suicide is greater than that already tragic number suggests. When a person dies by suicide, there are on average at least six others whose lives are permanently altered by the loss of their loved one.

In addition, for every life lost to suicide, there are 32 people who have attempted, 76 people who have made plans to take their own lives, and 264 others who have had serious thoughts of suicide.

Suicide has severe economic consequences in the U.S.

Suicide impacts people of all ages, races, ethnicities, ability, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, gender identities, religions, nationalities, or veteran status.

Around the Globe

According the the World Health Association, suicide is the third leading cause of death among 15-29 year olds worldwide.

73% of global suicides occur in low- and middle-income countries.

The prevention of suicide has not been adequately addressed globally due to a lack of awareness of suicide as a major public health problem and the taboo in many societies to openly discuss it.
